Between God’s Image and Idols: How Can God be Represented?

Abstract

The book of Exodus and its interpreters discuss in depth the question of representation in general and of the representation of God in particular. Though no comprehension of a transcendental being can be achieved without some representational mediation (and consequently no divine authority recognized), the ways of representing God cannot be merely conventional. God himself determines the legitimate modes of his representation—both the aesthetic (sensual and artistic) and the political (the authority of law). The article draws the dividing line between appropriate and inappropriate modes of representation, which marks the distinction between the worship of God and idolatry.
